(1.) Midpoints, and the aspect ratio is constrained to that of the un-cropped image. If this option is selected then the predefined ratios (3.) are disabled, along with the height/width adjustment. The cursor changes to indicate the type of movement allowed. The midpoints adjust just the width or height whilst the corner points adjust both.
You can hover over the image and click and drag on any of the white adjustment points.
